Part time jobs opportunities with Bob the Bus

2  Part time positions available

Totnes and Rural Community Transport (operating as Bob the Bus) – can you help to keep the wheels turning?
Bob the Bus is a highly respected local charity running a fleet of 5 minibuses. We operate scheduled services in and around Totnes from Monday to Saturday, and a monthly Travel Club. We also offer private hire to local community groups.
We’re recruiting part-time staff (2 posts each up to 20 h/week) to work for Bob the Bus.
We would love to hear from you if you’re interested in helping to coordinate our operations in an administrative role, or to be responsible for the day-to-day availability and smooth operation of our small fleet of buses.
Both these roles are varied and some of them are ‘public facing’, dealing with enquiries from passengers and other members of the public.
The following is a summary of the combined responsibilities of both jobs – their allocation will depend on the interests and capabilities of the successful applicants:
• Ensure that buses are prepared for weekly service.
• Monitor and record mileage and fuel consumption on a weekly basis.
• Ensure that buses are delivered for safety checking and servicing when required.
• Undertake occasional driving shifts.
• Prepare a monthly rota for our volunteer drivers.
• Deal with bookings and payments for Travel Club trips.
• Respond to enquiries for private hire and coordinate with other operations.
A more detailed summary is available on request.
The nature of the work means that flexibility is required in working hours, and some weekend working may be necessary.
At least one of the successful candidates should hold a clean driving licence which includes a D1 category entitlement, and should be capable and confident in driving our 16-seat minibuses. The administrative post requires reasonable IT skills (email, word processing, simple spreadsheets).
Remuneration: in the region of £2,500 per month pro rata, equivalent to £16 / hour. Some overtime may be payable but is not guaranteed.
Our current coordinator is starting a career break in September, so both these vacancies will start in August to allow time for familiarisation and handover. We anticipate that contracts will be for 6 months in the first instance, although there may be the opportunity for more permanent posts.
The jobs are very varied, so we’d like to hear from as many interested candidates as possible. Please get in touch for an informal discussion about the job and for information on how to apply.

Saturday Service

Bob on Saturday – from 27th May

We’re delighted to introduce a new Saturday morning circular service, connecting Follaton and Bridgetown with Totnes town centre.

What’s different about the Saturday service…?

  • It runs mornings only.
  • Note that departure times from Follaton (on the hour) are different from Mon-Fri.
  • Catch the return service to Follaton from the bottom of Fore Street, not the bus shelter!
  • The service does NOT call at Leatside, Baltic Wharf or Follaton Oak.
  • Bus passes are valid all day at weekends.

What’s the same…?

  • No change to 80p/50p fares.
  • It’s still a ‘Hail and Ride’ service, so we can pick up/set down anywhere on the route.
  • Where possible, we will operate with our low-floor, accessible Sprinter buses.

Any questions?

Or speak to a driver on any of our services.

Proposed Saturday Service – Survey

Following interest shown by some of our customers we are thinking about introducing a Saturday service. A trial is being planned initially with a limited service on Saturday mornings.

We really want your feedback on this proposal. Please take the survey here: Survey

It’s ‘All Change’ at Bob the Bus.

Long-standing Chair Simon Harrington and wife Barbara are moving to Suffolk later this year.

Incoming Chair Steve Grove said “Simon has worked tirelessly for Bob the Bus over many years. He’s been incredibly hands-on, and has guided the organisation through its expansion from the days of the Harbourne Shuttle to become one of the most respected of local charities. He will be a very hard act to follow.”

Bob the Bus operates two regular round-town services from Monday to Friday, connecting Follaton and Bridgetown to the town centre, Leatside surgery and the railway station. These are ‘hail and ride’ services, so can stop anywhere on the route. They’re popular with shoppers, tourists and students – in fact anyone who wants to get around cheaply. From April, the service to Harberton and Harbertonford is being withdrawn, as these villages are now well served by the Tally Ho 164 route. But Bob still goes to Ashprington/Cornworthy (Wednesday and Friday) and Stoke Gabriel (Tuesday and Friday).

And, from the end of March, Bob will be accepting contactless payments from your credit card or phone, in addition to bus passes or even cash.

Bob the Bus is making a good post-Covid recovery, thanks partly to on-going support from Town and District councils. Regular passenger numbers are up to about 60% of their pre-pandemic level, and its Travel Club and private hire activities are operating normally. But there are lots of challenges ahead. Steve said “We have a great team of nearly 40 volunteer drivers, but we need more to maintain and grow the range of services on offer. And we’re always on the look-out for a secure hub where we could park and maintain our 4 buses more easily. If you’d like to help, contact us via, or phone 07800 745332.”
