Volunteering with Bob the Bus

Bob the Bus wouldn’t exist without the thousands of hours put in by our volunteers.

Volunteering is a great way to give something back to the community.  Our passengers really appreciate this vital service – as well as reaching the parts of Totnes which other public transport doesn’t, a regular bus service helps combat loneliness and rural isolation, and helps everyone stay connected with their community.  And taking the bus into town means you don’t have to hunt for a parking space…

Admin support

Help with back office admin tasks – responding to emails, updating our website and social media, fundraising and PR – if you have the skills we want to hear from you!

Become a driver

Bob the Bus is driven by a team of around 30 volunteer drivers.  Our drivers are reliable and committed, and the service simply would not work without them.  To become a volunteer driver you need to have a D1 Category on your licence and ideally have had experience driving a minibus or large vehicle.

Interested in being a volunteer driver?

To keep our schedules services running, we need to cover 21 half-day shifts every week.  Most drivers prefer a regular shift every week or two.  If you can’t spare a half-day, then the shifts can be broken down into 2-hour segments.  Some drivers prefer to work on a relief basis, and offer irregular cover, sometimes at short notice.  Our drivers are reliable and committed, and the service simply would not work without them.

To become a volunteer driver you need to have a D1 Category on your license and ideally have had experience driving a minibus or large vehicle. Drivers undergo a full induction and training programme.  We ensure drivers are competent and confident before they take over a service.

What our drivers are saying...

“As a woman driver it always seemed that we were in the minority, and I needed to be one of the boys! I have loved giving something back to the Community, and hope that by providing the service it will be there for me and others to use in the future.”

“I love driving Bob! You get to meet loads of interesting people and hear all the local gossip. I feel privileged to be part of providing such a vital community service.”

“Passengers are very grateful for the service we provide, which makes you feel like your role as a volunteer driver is highly valued. There is a real social atmosphere on the bus.”
